NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday awarded life imprisonment to former MP and RJD politician Prabhunath Singh in a 1995 double murder case. The case pertains to the killing of two men on the day of polling for assembly elections in Chapra in Bihar’s Saran district in March 1995.
The apex court also directed Singh and the Bihar government to compensate the victims in the case. It asked them to pay Rs 10 lakh each to the family of the deceased, and Rs 5 lakh to those who sustained injuries.
The Supreme Court had last month held Singh guilty of murdering Rajendra Rai and Daroga Rai in 1995 and convicted him in the case. The former Maharajganj MP had earlier been acquitted in the case by a lower court and the Patna high court.
Singh, meanwhile, was already serving a life sentence in Hazaribag jail in a case pertaining to the murder of one Ashok Singh, who had defeated Prabhunath in the 1995 assembly elections.
