Hang my son, I’d have shot him: Father of Ujjain rape accused | India News

INDORE: The father of the 24-year-old autorickshaw driver, who has been arrested for offering a lift to a lost child but brutally raping her, has said that he should have been shot, and that death is the only punishment if he is found guilty.
“What other punishment can be given to such a person? Only if you hang such people to death will it set an example and act as a deterrent against such crimes. He was living with us after committing the crime but I was not aware of what he had done. I would have shot my son had I known this earlier,” said Raju Soni, father of suspect Bharat Soni, tears streaming down his eyes.
“I was not aware of any of this. When we read about it in newspapers, we were shocked. It was only after police arrested him from our shop that we came to know that my son was accused of this horrible crime,” he said.
Bharat usually returned from work around 2-3am, but had returned even later on Monday morning, said his father adding, “We even spoke about the rape at home on Tuesday, and how gruesome it was. He asked me where the incident had occurred, and then went off for work.”
Bharat is a resident of Nanakheda locality of Ujjain and has two earlier cases of violence registered against him. A Pocso court remanded him in police custody for a week, said Mahakal police station in-charge Ajay Verma. The Ujjain Bar Association has said none of its lawyers will defend the accused in court.
