JAMMU: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids on Saturday in J&K’s Poonch in connection with the terror attack in Rajouri on January 1-2 this year that had left seven dead.
The raids with local police across five locations covered the premises of Overground Workers (OGWs) linked to the banned Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), NIA officials said. The action was based on inputs from two suspects arrested last month for allegedly helping the terrorists.
The attack on Dhangri village in Rajouri on the night of January 1 killed five and left several injured. The next morning (January 2), two more died and more were injured when an IED, suspected to have been planted by the terrorists in a house the previous night, exploded.
An NIA spokesperson said Saturday that several digital devices and documents “containing incriminating data and content” were in the raids on OGWs at Gursai village in Poonch’s Mendhar area. “These are being scrutinised for unravelling the conspiracy,” the official said.
According to the NIA official, the raids followed information gleaned from Nisar Ahmed and Mushtaq Hussain, the two suspects who are now in Jammu jail after being arrested on August 31 this year.
The NIA has said the duo harboured the Rajouri terrorists. “They had provided logistics support to the terrorists for more than two months and had sheltered them in a hideout they had built. The duo had been operating on the directions of Pakistan-based LeT handlers, namely Saifullah, Abu Qatal and Mohd Qasim,” the official said.
J&K police probed the case initially. The NIA took it over on January 13.
