SRINAGAR: Terrorists shot and killed an off-duty J&K police head constable, identified as Ghulam Mohammed Dar, near his home in Kralpora village of Kunzer block in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday evening. The 50-year-old Dar leaves behind his wife and seven daughters.
This marks the third targeted shooting in as many days in the Kashmir valley. It follows the shooting of an off-duty police inspector who was wounded in Srinagar on Sunday and the killing of a brick kiln worker from Uttar Pradesh in Pulwama district in south Kashmir on Monday.
Dar was swiftly transported to the sub-divisional hospital in Tangamarg, about 8km from Kunzer, where he was later pronounced dead. The area has been cordoned off, and a manhunt is in progress to capture the terrorists.
Sources said 20 security personnel had lost their lives in terrorist attacks in the Union territory this year, till October 31 — with nine casualties in Kashmir and 11 in Jammu.
The surge in targeted attacks is believed to be linked to intensive security operations aimed at thwarting terrorist infiltration attempts across the Pakistan border prior to the onset of winter. During these operations, at least half-a-dozen terrorists were killed while attempting to cross the heavily guarded border.
