CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR/MUMBAI: Internet services in Maharashtra’s Jalna and Beed were suspended on Tuesday till November 2 in the midst of the violence and arson wracking the two Marathwada districts, and other parts of the state, since Monday with the Maratha community intensifying their demand for reservation.
A Maratha youth, meanwhile, was found hanging at his home in Ahmednagardistrict’s Zole village on Tuesday morning, with a suicide note in his room that said he had ended his life over Marathas not getting reservation.Ahmednagar SP Rakesh Ola said investigations were on to confirm the reasons that led Sagar Bhausaheb Wale (27) to kill himself.
Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said in Mumbai on Tuesday that cases will be filed under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) against those indulging in violence and arson.
Nanded SP Shrikrishna Kokate was injured in stone-pelting by pro-quota agitators at the district headquarters. Orders imposing restrictions on the assembly of four or more people, agitations or protests have been issued in Nanded, Beed and Dharashiv districts. Beed collector Deepa Mudhol Munde said the orders would not be applicable to academic institutes and business establishments.
Protesters continued to target public properties, torch tyres on state and NHs and block roads in different parts of the state till Tuesday evening. Considering the attack on the premises of elected representatives, police cover was increased at the residences of state ministers Chandrakant Patil in Kolhapur, Shamburaj Desai in Satara and Chhagan Bhujbal in Nashik. Similar arrangements have been made for all MLAs and MPs from Marathwada.
In Jalna, Ghansawangi gram panchayat office and a toll plaza were set on fire. In Parbhani, protesters pelted stones at police vehicles. In Beed, over 70 buses of the state transport utility were torched. Bus services were called off in Marathwada region and also in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Karnataka’s state transport utility stopped services to Maharashtra.
Chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Fadnavis have told the police in Marathwada region to take strict action against those indulging in violence.
