PM Modi hails Speaker OM Birla, says he presided over golden era in history of Lok Sabha | India News


NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday lauded newly-elected Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for his conduct as presiding officer in the previous House and also as a parliamentarian. He said Birla presided over a golden era in Lok Sabha’s history as a number of historic decisions were taken during its previous term.
Noting that he was the first Speaker after Balram Jakhar to get another term after serving a full tenure, the PM expressed confidence that he would continue to create new benchmarks.Jakhar served between 1980 and 1989.
Modi pointed to a 20-year period when those elected Speakers either did not contest elections or did not win an election after their appointment, and said Birla had scripted history by returning as Speaker after emerging victorious again.
The PM noted that the previous Lok Sabha notched around 97% productivity, the highest in 25 years, and said Birla ensured the House functioned even during the Covid pandemic and maintained its dignity and decorum, at times by taking difficult decisions.
He said Birla’s polite and humble personality and his winning smile helped him in conducting the House. He also mentioned the Speaker’s personal touch and concern for members during the pandemic.
The PM praised the Kota MP’s welfare work for his constituency, saying it would inspire young parliamentarians. He also expressed confidence that the speaker would continue to achieve new success.
Remembering the transformative decisions taken during the 17th Lok Sabha, Modi mentioned several “landmark” legislations, including ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Bill and the three new criminal laws.
He said the long journey of democracy witnessed various stopovers that provided an opportunity to create new records and expressed confidence that people would continue to cherish the 17th Lok Sabha for its achievements.
Modi recalled the inauguration of the new Parliament building under the chairmanship of Birla and also praised the steps taken for strengthening the foundations of democracy.
The PM lauded the paperless workflow and the systematic briefing process initiated by Birla to boost discussions in the House and praised him for a very successful conference of presiding officers of legislative bodies of G20 nations which was attended by a record number of countries.
He said Parliament House was not just walls but was the centre of aspirations of 140 crore citizens, emphasising that functioning of the House deepened the foundation of democracy.
