Killer RPF cop in custody, says he’s unaware of events on train | India News

MUMBAI: Chetan Singh, a 34-year-old RPF constable who gunned down his superior and three passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express, was remanded into police custody till August 7 by a magistrate’s court on Tuesday. In a three-page application, the Government Railway Police (GRP) sought his custody saying Singh was not cooperating with the investigation and they were yet to find the motive for the killings.

Singh was a different picture on Tuesday. He looked subdued when produced in court amid tight bandobast. Police evicted mediapersons and lawyers from the courtroom citing “security reasons”. According to his lawyer Surendra Landge, Singh told the court that the police had not provided him meals and needed to be instructed. “GRP officers told the court that tests relating to Singh’s mental health need to be carried out as he appears to have a mental health condition. Police have also said they need to visit Singh’s residence in UP, speak to his family and gather evidence,” Landge said.
Landge also said that with the court’s permission he spoke to his client after taking off his veil. Singh is said to have claimed that he was innocent and was unaware of what happened on the train.

Singh will be lodged in a separate cell at the Borivali lock-up. Police officials said they have retrieved CCTV footage from the train and will analyse Singh’s call data records. Police have recorded statements of 10-15 witnesses including passengers and railway staff.
