Goa AAP chief held for bid to mislead probe in accident case | India News

PANAJI: Almost four weeks after three people were killed and many others injured in Banastarim in Goa in a drunken driving case, police on Thursday arrested AAP state president and advocate Amit Palekar for allegedly trying to mislead the probe by presenting a dummy driver.
“We have arrested Palekar for destruction of evidence, harbouring the offender and giving false information to police,” Goa police crime branch inspector Narayan Chimulkar told TOI. Within hours of his arrest, Palekar moved the sessions court and was granted interim bail.
Police sources told TOI that on August 6, after builder Paresh Sawardekar killed three people while driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV in a drunken state, Palekar had approached Mardol police with a dummy driver, Ganesh Lamani, to save Paresh. Lamani was also arrested on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the opposition rushed to defend Palekar. AAP called it a “political vendetta”, while Congress described it as “political witch-hunting”.
