Rahul Gandhi seeks JPC probe into Adani group transactions | India News

MUMBAI: Responding to reports in foreign media about irregularities committed by the Adani group, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday asked PM Narendra Modi to set up a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) to probe the “foreign transactions” of the group.
“As head of the G20 summit, Modi had stated that India believes in a level-playing field and complete transparency in economic transactions. Then why is special treatment being given to the Adani group?” Rahul, who is in Mumbai for the two-day INDIA group meeting, said at a press meet.
He further said, “From reports that have appeared in two prominent newspapers from abroad, it has been stated that over a billion dollars went out from India, were circulated in different places and came back to India. Whose money is this? Only a JPC can find out.”
Rahul raised three questions for Modi: “Whose money is this? What is the role of (Gautam Adani’s brother) Vinod Adani? Why are two foreign nationals, Nasir Ali Shaban Ahli from the UAE and Chang Chung-Ling from China, being allowed to play with the valuation of the Adani group?”
He said Sebi has given a clean chit to the Adani group, and the person who gave the clean chit was now a director in a private television channel controlled by Adani.
Rahu further asked why Adani, “who is close to the PM”, was allowed to move a billion dollars to pump up his company’s share price and use that money to “capture Indian assets”. “Why is he being given a free ride?” he asked.
The Congress leader said it was important that all these questions were answered before guests arrived in India for the G20 meeting.
“National assets are being bought through money that Adani’s companies have earned by inflating their share prices. The mastermind behind this is Gautam Adani’s brother Vinod Adani and two others — Nasir Ali Shaban Ahli and Chang Chung-Ling, a Chinese national. What is the role of Vinod Adani and the two foreign nationals? They have taken over most of the ports and airports and are now in the process of taking over the Dharavi project too,” Rahul said.
He claimed specific documents had been submitted to Sebi but Adani was given a clean chit owing to poor investigation. “Since the PM was interested in the case, there was no probe at all. We are trying to show to the world that we are a transparent economy, but that is not the case. Certain companies are favoured for obvious reasons,” he said.
The Congress MP said it was shocking that investigating agencies such as ED and CBI were not probing the Adani group.
