Nia: Kerala train-arson accused self-radicalised lone-wolf attacker, says NIA in chargesheet

NEW DELHI: The arsonist from Delhi who allegedly poured petrol on passengers before starting a fire inside a train bogey in Kerala in April this year, was a self-radicalised ‘lone wolf‘ who deliberately chose to travel thousands of kilometres to execute the terror act at a location where he would not be recognised.
As per the chargesheet filed by NIA on Friday, sole accused Sharukh alias Sharukh Saudi had intended to return to normal life after the commission of the gory act “aimed at creating terror in the minds of the general public”. Three passengers, including a child, were killed and nine others injured in the arson attack.
Saifi, a 27-year-old, was charged under various sections of IPC, UAPA, Railways Act and Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act.
Saifi started from New Delhi on March 31 and reached Kerala on April 2, NIA probe has revealed. Before setting the D1 coach of Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express on fire on April 2, he had purchased petrol from a petrol bunk in Shoranur and a lighter from a store near the Shoranur railway station. He sprinkled petrol on the passengers and set the bogey on fire with an intention to kill people, NIA said.
The accused, a resident of Shaheen Bagh locality here, was self-radicalised through various online propaganda material. He followed radical and hard-line Islamic preachers, including those based in Pakistan, on social media. He had committed the arson as a jihadi terror act in pursuance of the online radicalisation.
The Kerala train arson case was initially registered at Kozhikode railway police station, and later by Special Investigation Team of Kerala. NIA took over the case on April 17.
