PUNE: Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Sunday said nomination of her sister-in-law and Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, against her in Lok Sabha elections is a BJP conspiracy to “finish” NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) president Sharad Pawar in politics.
“BJP leaders, during their visit to Baramati, said they wanted to finish (the political career of) Sharad Pawar. In our culture, we consider our elder brother’s wife a mother-figure, and she (Sunetra) is like a mother to me,” Sule said. “BJP broke the Pawar family as the party does not have any candidate to contest from Baramati.”
On Saturday, NCP had announced Sunetra as official candidate of Mahayuti for Baramati seat. Sule and Sunetra have already started their campaigns in Baramati, a bastion of Pawar family.
The three-time MP said BJP has no intention of doing any development or serving the nation, but only wants to make ‘Marathi manoos’ fight against each other and benefit from it. She termed fielding of Sunetra an attack on Maharashtra’s pride by Delhi.
Sule said the fight between their the two parties was ideological, but BJP has made it personal.
“She (Sunetra) is a cultured woman and has stayed with us for years after her marriage. She is like a daughter to Sharad Pawar, and we respect her. My fight is not against any individual but against wrong policies of BJP. In Baramati, water crisis is a serious challenge, and the problem is similar in many rural parts of the state,” she said.
Reacting to Sule’s comments, state BJP’s chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhyay said: “If Supriya respects Sunetra like a mother, she should leave the Baramati seat and not contest election this time.”
