SRINAGAR: J&K has registered 1.27 crore tourist arrivals this year so far, and the figure is expected to touch a record high by the year-end, lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha said on Tuesday, crediting restoration of peace and normalcy for making it possible.
“This year, so far 1.27 crore tourists have visited J&K and the figure is much higher than (corresponding period) last year. We hope to see record-breaking tourist arrivals by the year-end. We are setting up tourist infrastructure everywhere in the UT,” he said. “When a large number of guests will keep their date with Kashmir, local shopkeepers, taxi drivers, and hotel and shikara owners will earn and our economy will improve.”
Addressing a gathering at Charar-e-Shareef in Budgam district, the LG said businesses remain open throughout the year and schools and colleges function normally in Kashmir today, as a peaceful atmosphere now prevails.
“No development is possible unless peace is established. There was a time when shikara, hotel and autorickshaw owners would suffer a lot due to the uncertainty. We have come out of that phase,” the LG said.
