Haryana clashes: 80 arrests, 44 FIRs; fresh mob attack kills 1 in Gurgaon | India News

GURGAON: Communal clashes that began in Nuh on Monday afternoon with an attack on a religious procession that was headed for a temple took another dark turn at midnight in Gurgaon when an armed mob stormed a mosque, knifed a 23-year-old man sleeping inside it to death and left another with grievous wounds.

The mosque attack happened even as security forces deployed in large numbers in neighbouring Nuh and the Gurgaon police and administration brass focused on Sohna, where mobs had earlier in the day gone on a rampage, attacking shops and houses.

While a 48-hour curfew was imposed in Nuh on Monday midnight, in addition to the suspension of internet and SMS services, to contain any further flareups, attacks on shops and incidents of arson were reported from various parts of Gurgaon through Tuesday, keeping the Millennium City on the edge and police on their toes. There were no reports of any deaths or injuries in Tuesday’s incidents of vandalism.

The Gurgaon administration suspended internet services in Sohna, Manesar and Pataudi till further orders, and issued another directive, asking all schools to remain closed for physical classes till August 2. Many office-goers opted to work from home after their workplaces sent out advisories not to travel.

The Haryana government said it had registered 44 FIRs till Tuesday evening to investigate the communal clashes and police in different districts had arrested 80 people. Most of the FIRs – at least 22, according to senior police officers – were filed in Nuh.

Although the government put the number of deaths from the rioting at five, latest reports confirmed four persons — two homeguards, the Gurgaon mosque member and a Panipat resident who possibly participated in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)-organised Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra that was attacked in Nuh — had succumbed to injuries.
